چکیده

The heat increment of feeding (HIF) was investigated in the tawny owl (Strix aluco) in central Norway (631N, 101E), close to the northern limit of its distribution. HIF was measured as the increase in heat production (measured as oxygen consumption) after force-feeding the owls with laboratory mice at thermoneutral conditions (20 1C) and during coldexposure (5 1C and 5 1C). The basal metabolic rate of the owls (mean mass 419 g) was 4.39 kJ h 1 and the lower critical temperature was approximately 16 1C. During cold conditions, HIF substituted for thermogenesis, and at an ambient temperature of 5 1C the substitution was complete. Calculations indicate that the substitution by HIF may save the owls as much as 60% of their daily thermoregulatory costs. This corresponds to about 10% of their total daily energy budget. r 2004 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Tawny owl (Strix aluco) and Hume's Tawny owl (Strix butleri) are distinct species: evidence from nucleotide sequences of the cytochrome b gene.

The cytochrome b gene of the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco), Hume's Tawny Owl (Strix butleri) and the African wood owl (Strix woodfordii) was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and partially sequenced (300 base pairs). Sequences differ substantially (9 to 12% nucleotide substitutions) between these taxa indicating that they represent distinct species, which is also implicated from morphologi...

The mucinous layer covering the corneal endothelium in the owl Strix aluco.

ABELSDORFF and Wessely (1909) reported the curious observation made in connexion with other work, that the aqueous humour of certain owls, Strix aluco (Syrnium aluco, Tawny owl), Athene noctua (Little owl), and Asio otus (Otus vulgaris, Long-eared owl), is slimy and highly viscous and easily spun into threads. On acidification with acetic acid, a ropy precipitate is formed. The part of the aque...

Tawny owl (Strix aluco) as a potential transmitter of Enterobacteriaceae epidemiologically relevant for forest service workers, nature protection service and ornithologists.

Established taxa within the Enterobacteriaceae wereisolated from cloacal swabs of Strix aluco chicks in nest boxes located at five research sites. ChromID ESBL medium (bioMerieux) was used to select a pool of Enterobacteriaceae strains producing extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. Drug sensitivity of the chosen strains was determined from the full pool of Enterobacteriaceae to 6 chemotherapeutic...

Relative Effects of Road Risk, Habitat Suitability, and Connectivity on Wildlife Roadkills: The Case of Tawny Owls (Strix aluco)

BACKGROUND Despite its importance for reducing wildlife-vehicle collisions, there is still incomplete understanding of factors responsible for high road mortality. In particular, few empirical studies examined the idea that spatial variation in roadkills is influenced by a complex interplay between road-related factors, and species-specific habitat quality and landscape connectivity. METHODOL...
